Hello! England 第1回

まずは簡単に自己紹介をします。
私はイギリスのマンチェスターという都市で生まれ育ちました。大学では「日本学」を専攻して、日本の文化や歴史について学びました。日本語の勉強は4年間ぐらい続けていて、今年7月に卒業しました! 子どもの頃からずっと日本に行ってみたいという夢を持っていて、その夢を2023年に叶えました。大阪大学への留学をきっかけに、日本に対する興味が深まって、「将来は日本で働きたいな」と思うようになりました!

First, I’d like to introduce myself. I was born and raised in a city called Manchester. At University I did a Japanese studies degree and studied Japan’s history and culture. I have been studying Japanese for about four years now and I graduated in July! Ever since I was a child, my dream was always to go to Japan, and in 2023, that dream became a reality. Thanks to the period I spent studying abroad in Japan, my interest and love for Japan grew even more and I decided that in the future I would like to work in Japan.

趣味は多いですが、多くのイギリス人と同じくサッカーが大好きです。特に、北イングランドにある「ニューカッスル・ユナイテッド」というチームを応援しています。また、音楽が大好きで、ビートルズやオアシス、そして山下達郎さんの音楽をよく聴きます。暇なときにはギターを弾くのも好きです。日本にいる間に、色々なアーティストのライブにも行ってみたいと思っています!

I have many hobbies, but of course, like many British people, I love football. I support a team in the north of England called Newcastle United. I also have a deep interest in music. I love the songs of the Beatles, Oasis and Tatsuro Yamashita, all of which I listen to frequently. Playing the guitar in my free time is another hobby of mine. While I'm here i would like to go and see a few live shows!

イギリスは日本と同じく島国で、人口は約7,000万人です。気候は比較的寒くて、雨が多い国です。実はイギリスは「連合王国」と呼ばれて、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドという4つの国から構成されています。首都のロンドンは、世界中から多くの観光客が訪れる都市です。紅茶、フィッシュアンドチップス、ハリー・ポッター、ザ・ビートルズなどが、イギリスの代表的なイメージとしてよくあげられます。さらに、サッカーはイギリス人にとって「宗教のような存在」と言われるぐらい人気があって、全国で愛されています。私の出身のマンチェスターは、雨が多いことで知られていますが、その分、住民の精神的な強さが魅力の都市です。

Like Japan, the UK is also an island country and its population is around 70 million. It’s a relatively cold place with a lot of rain. The UK is actually a Kingdom which consists of 4 countries, England, Scotland, Wales and northern island. The capital city, London, is popular with tourist all over the world. When one thinks of what typically represents the UK, people usually think of tea, fish and chips, Harry Potter and The Beatles. On top of this, the UK is also known for football (we don’t call it soccer) which is loved across the country and acts as a sort of religion for many of us. My home city of Manchester is well known for its rain, but the people there have a strong character, which is another widely acknowledged feature of the city.

近年、イギリスでは「日本ブーム」が起こっています。どの町でも寿司屋さんやラーメン店を見かけるようになって、若者の間ではアニメやゲームが大人気です。ドラゴンボールやナルトを知らない若者はほとんどいないです。また、日本のアーティストや作家、スポーツ選手にも人気があって、日本製品の人気も高まっています。一方で、日本でもイギリスの文化に興味を持っている人が多くて、現在の日英関係は、今まで一番いいと考えられています。個人的には、私たちはどちらも島国で、長い歴史を持つという共通点があるからこそ、互いに尊敬と関心があると思います。

In recent years, there has been a Japan boom in the UK. No matter what town you go to, there are ramen and sushi restaurants. Amongst people, anime and games are extremely popular, there are almost no youngsters who haven’t heard of Dragon ball or Naruto. There is a high level of interest in Japanese authors and athletes, and Japanese products are getting more and more popular ever year. There are also many people in Japan who are interested in the UK. It’s said that right now, Anglo-Japanese relations are at their highest point in history. In my personal opinion, I think that we have a deep respect and admiration for each other as we are both island nations with rich histories.

これから、加賀での生活や活動を通じて、地域の皆さまと交流しながら、イギリスと日本の架け橋となれるように努めていきます。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします！

From now on, through actively participating in daily life in Kaga and by interacting with everyone here, I hope I will be able to act as a bridge that connects Japan and the UK!
