Hello! England 第4回 (クリスマス版）

イギリスでは、クリスマスの準備がとても早く始まります。お店では10月からクリスマス関連の商品を売り始めて、ハロウィンが終わるとイギリス中が一気にクリスマスモードになっていきます。ラジオではクリスマスソングが流れ始め、家族はクリスマスツリーを飾って、ほとんどの家やお店がクリスマスデコレーションでいっぱいになっていきます。イギリスのあちらこちらでクリスマスマーケットが開かれます。特に、マンチェスターなどの大都市ではクリスマスマーケットが非常に人気で、美味しいビールや食べ物が並んで、子ども向けのお菓子がたくさんあって、地域の職人による手作りの商品も買うことができます。もちろん、何も買わなくてもクリスマスの雰囲気を存分に楽しめます。

In the UK, the buildup for Christmas starts very early, with some shops selling Christmas related items as early as October. As soon as Halloween ends, the country goes into full Christmas mode. Christmas songs start to play on the radio, families put up Christmas trees, virtually every house and shop is filled with decorations and Christmas markets open across the nation. These markets are especially popular in big cities, such as my hometown of Manchester. Beer and delicious food are sold, as well as sweets for children. You can also buy items made by local craftworkers and even if you don’t purchase anything, it is a lovely place to go and sink in the Christmas atmosphere.

クリスマスは家族と楽しい時間を過ごす大事な休暇と考えられています。親戚と過ごす人もいれば、身近な家族と過ごす人もいます。クリスマスの前日には、皆クリスマス・イブを楽しんでいて、クリスマス・イブの過ごし方は家族によってさまざまです。例えば、クリスマス当日の準備をする家族もいれば、家で豪華なディナーを楽しむ家族もいたり、一緒にパブに行ってビールやワインを楽しむ家族もたくさんいます。より宗教的な家庭では地元の教会のクリスマスの儀式に参加するので、クリスマスの時期にはほとんどの教会がいっぱいになります。クリスマス・イブはワクワクしながら、クリスマス当日を楽しみにする一日です。

Christmas is considered to be an important holiday during which everyone enjoys family time. As a result, most people do not work during the Christmas season and there is a long school holiday. Some chose to spend Christmas amongst their close family, while others spend it with their extended family. Before Christmas day, people enjoy ‘Christmas eve’ (24^th December). Christmas eve is enjoyed in a multitude of ways: some choose to use it as a day to prepare for Christmas day, some families have a big meal at home while others go to the pub and enjoy beer and wine. More religious families will attend a Christmas eve service, and UK churches are usually full during this time of year. Christmas eve is exciting and filled with anticipation for Christmas day, with a party-like atmosphere.

クリスマス当日は朝早くから始まります。待ちきれない子供たちは親のベッドで飛び跳ねながら、「プレゼントを開けたい！」と言います。クリスマスツリーの下にはたくさんのプレゼントが置かれていて（親からのプレゼントやサンタからのものもあります）、家族みんなが起きたら開けられます。一般的に、子供たちはプレゼントを開けたら、残りのクリスマスの日は新しいおもちゃで遊んで過ごします。大人もプレゼントをもらいますが、子供に比べると量は少なめです。プレゼントとしてお金を渡す家庭もあります。 プレゼントを開けた後は、クリスマス・ディナーを食べて、やっとリラックスできます。散歩に出かける家族もいれば、映画を見る家族もいます。個人的には、クリスマスの時期にヒュー・グラントが主演する、イギリスの作品でイギリス人の間で大人気の映画『ラブ・アクチュアリー』を見るのが好きです。クリスマスの日の終わりは、多くの人にとって少し寂しく感じられるので、「クリスマス・ブルース」と呼ばれる現象もあります。クリスマスは楽しいので、現実に戻りたくないと感じる人が多いと言われています。

Christmas day starts early in the morning, usually with impatient children jumping on their parents’ bed asking if they can open the presents. Presents, which are placed under the tree (some by parents and some by Santa), are opened once everyone has woken up. Children usually receive most of the presents and spend the rest of the day playing with their new toys. Older family members receive presents, although often fewer in quantity. In some families giving money is also common. Once presents have been opened there is a Christmas dinner, after which everyone is finally able to relax. Family members watch movies together while some go on walk. I especially like to watch a UK-produced movie called ‘Love Actually’ starring Hugh Grant, which is a particular favorite of mine and many others in the UK. The end of Christmas day can often feel very sad and many experience the ‘Christmas blues’ as excitement fades away and people have to face going back to reality in a few days.

クリスマス時期のイギリスの田舎景色・The English Countryside at Christmas

クリスマス・ディナーはクリスマスのメインと考えられています。家族はお互いに楽しい時間を過ごし、美味しい食べ物を食べながら、賑やかに会話を楽しみます。イギリス料理はよく「まずい」と言われますが、クリスマスの時期はとても美味しいと思います。料理の中心はロースト・ターキーで、グレービーやスタッフィング（豚肉やパン粉、ハーブが入ったもの）が添えられます。そのほか、野菜やローストポテト、ピッグ・イン・ブランケット（ベーコンで包まれたソーセージ）も出されます。食事の前には、皆が紙製の帽子をかぶってお互いに冗談を言って、賑やかな雰囲気を作ります。

Christmas dinner is arguably the most important part of Christmas. Family members enjoy each other’s company and partake in lively conversation while enjoying delicious food and wine. Though UK food does not have the best reputation, it really shines during Christmas. The heart of the meal is Roast Turkey, which is accompanied by gravy and stuffing, a delicious mixture of breadcrumbs, herbs and sausage meat. On the side there is roast potatoes and vegetables as well as pigs in blankets (small sausages wrapped up in bacon). Before eating, family members put on paper party hats and share jokes, which creates a lively atmosphere.

クリスマスディナー・Christmas Dinner

音楽がなければ、クリスマスじゃありません。個人的には、クリスマスのムードを出したい時は、アメリカの50年代のクラシック音楽をよく聴きます。フランク・シナトラの音楽を聴くと、クリスマスの雰囲気を感じずにはいられません。最近は、日本のクリスマスソングも聴いていて、特に山下達郎の「クリスマス・イブ」やバックナンバーの「クリスマス・ソング」が気に入っています。しかし、クリスマス音楽といえば、WHAM！の「ラスト・クリスマス」に勝るものはありません。バックトラックは明るいのに、歌詞は切なく、クリスマス音楽の中でも非常に感動的な曲とされています。この曲は「クリスマス・ブルース」の気分にぴったりだと思います。

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the music. I usually go back to the classic Christmas songs of the 1950s when I try to get into the festive mood. Frank Sinatra’s warm voice never fails to create a cozy Christmas atmosphere. Recently I have been listening to Japanese Christmas songs as well. I really like Tatsuro Yamashita’s ‘Christmas eve’ and back number’s ‘Christmas Song’. However, when it comes to Christmas music, nothing will ever beat ‘Last Christmas’ by WHAM!. The song has mix of an upbeat backing track and painful lyrics, making it especially emotional amongst Christmas songs. The song perfectly fits the feeling of ‘Christmas blues’.

クリスマスの習慣は国によって違うので、他の国の習慣を学ぶのは楽しいです。今年の日本でのクリスマスを楽しみにしています！

Christmas traditions are different all over the world so it is fun to learn about them all! I cannot wait to enjoy Christmas in Japan this year!
