私がよく聞かれる質問の一つに「イギリスの和食はどうですか？」というものがあります。私はよく「和食はたくさんあって、たいてい美味しいけれど、日本のレストランで食べる和食とはちょっと違います」と答えます。

イギリス人の和食に対する考えは大きく変わってきました。1980年代に寿司が注目を浴び始め、早くてヘルシーな食べ物を好む国際的なビジネスマンに人気がありましたが、一般の人々はあまり寿司を知りませんでした。90年代には、イギリスに第一店舗目の回転寿司の店が登場し、いろいろな場所で店が開店し始めました。日本初の回転寿司店が開店してから40年後でしたが、イギリスでは回転寿司は興味の対象になって、「未来的で面白い」ものとして人々の関心を集めました。しかし、ほとんどのイギリス人は生魚に慣れていなかったため、楽しむ人は少数でした。

One of the questions which I get asked the most is ‘What is Japanese food like in the UK?’. I will often reply ‘There is a lot and it usually tastes good, but it is a bit different to what you would get in a Japanese restaurant’. The UK’s relationship with Japanese food has changed significantly over the years. Sushi started gaining recognition in the 1980s in London as it became a healthy and quick meal for business people, but was still seen as a novelty by most. In the 1990s, the first Conveyor-belt Sushi restaurants started popping in several locations. Though they opened almost four decades after Japan’s first Conveyor-belt Sushi restaurant, they became the object of fascination, often described as futuristic and fun. However, most of the UK was unfamiliar with the concept of eating raw fish, meaning that it was only enjoyed by a small amount of the population.

2000年代には、回転寿司屋さんがモールなどに開店して、「YO! Sushi」というチェーン店は家族連れに人気になりました。店内では、日本のミュージック・ビデオや東京の映像が流れていて、私を含む多くの人々にとって、「YO! Sushi」は美味しいだけでなく、五感で日本を感じることができる場所でした。このチェーン店のおかげで、さらに、寿司の人気が爆発的に広がりました。回転寿司ではないレストランも増えて、今ではスーパーでも寿司が買えるようになりました。寿司を提供するパブまで登場しています！

This started to change as more conveyor-belt sushi restaurants stared to pop up in more locations such as shopping malls, and chains like ‘YO! Sushi’ became popular with families. The restaurants had TVs showing clips of Tokyo, as well as Japanese music video, making it both a visual and gastronomic introduction to Japan for many across the UK, including myself. After this, Sushi’s popularity exploded. Non-Conveyor belt Sushi restaurants also started to appear, and you can even buy Sushi in supermarkets. I’ve even seen Sushi being served in Pubs!

そして近年、ラーメンブームが始まりました。特に、少し変わった名前の「わがまま」というレストランはどこにでもあります。「わがまま」は日本のラーメン屋さんとイギリスのチェーン店の中間のような存在です。日本にあるラーメンとはちょっと違いますが、毎日たくさんの人がそこに食べに行きます。そして、ラーメンだけでなく、一品料理もあり、特にカツカレーは大人気です。

In recent years there has also been a  ramen boom. The leader of this trend is the bizarrely-named restaurant ‘Wagamama’ (which can be translated to ‘selfishness’ in Japanese). The restaurant is a halfway between a standard British chain restaurant and a Japanese ramen shop. Though the ramen is a bit different compared to the ramen in Japan, the service is fast is enjoyed by many. The restaurant also serves smaller dishes as well as Katsu-curry, which is hugely popular.

イギリスにおいて、車は最も日本の影響を受けたものの1つです。イギリスの道路ではイギリス製の車よりも、トヨタや三菱、ホンダ、日産などの車が一般的です。サンダーランドにある日産の工場は、北イングランドの地域経済に非常に重要で、多くのサンダーランドの住民が日産の従業員です。イギリスで最大の日産の工場は、最盛期にはイギリスで生産された車全体の三分の一を生産していました。イギリスには90年代の車に興味を持っている日本車オタクのコミュニティもあります。

The aspect of Japan which is most visible in British life is cars. Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda and Nissan cars are some of the most visible on UK roads, possibly even more so than British cars. The Nissan factory in Sunderland is a vital part of the UK economy, providing thousands of jobs and is the focal point of the region’s economy. The factory is the largest car manufacturing plant in the UK, and at its peak it produced one-third of all cars produced in the UK. There are even many Japanese car Otaku in the UK who have a keen interest in Japanese cars from the 90s.

イギリスの芸術の世界では、日本の芸術は高く評価されています。ロンドンにある「ジャパン・ハウス」をはじめ、日本の芸術をメインにした博物館や展覧会はたくさんあります。有名な博物館は日本の芸術の展示が開かれると、多くの人が訪れます。イギリスの有名な大学ではよく「日本学」という専攻があって、活気ある学者のコミュニティがあります。

In the world of fine arts, Japan is highly respected in the UK. There are several museums and galleries dedicated to Japanese art, such as Japan House in London. When there are special exhibitions in renowned museums dedicated to Japanese art, they often attract many visitors. The top UK universities offer Japanese studies programs and there is a vibrant academic community in the UK.

しかし、無視できないのは、日本のポップカルチャーがイギリスに与えた影響です。アニメや漫画は、短期間のうちにあまり知られていないサブカルチャーから、大きな文化的存在へと成長しました。約10年ほど前までは、漫画はコミック・ブック店の小さなコーナーでしか買えませんでした。しかし今では、書店に日本の漫画コーナーが大きく広がっています。アニメも見る方法がほぼなかった状態から、今では人気のストリーミングプラットフォームで簡単に見られるようになりました。毎年夏になると、アニメコンベンションで何千人もの人がアニメキャラのコスプレをします。そして、呪術廻戦や鬼滅の刃などの日本製映画が公開されると、イギリスの映画館はすぐ満席になります。多くの人にとって、このような経験は日本文化への興味のきっかけになります。

However, what can not be ignored is the impact of Japanese popular culture on the UK.  anime and manga went from being a niche subculture to a cultural powerhouse in a very short space of time. Only around a decade or so ago, manga could only be bought in a small section of a comic-book shop, but now takes up large spaces in the top chain book shops. Anime went from being nearly inaccessible for many to being available on the world’s largest streaming platforms. At comic book conventions, thousands of people gather every summer to cosplay as their favorite anime characters. Children who were once raised on American cartoons now watch Dragonball and Naruto.  Cinemas are full for the releases of films such as JuJutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer. For many, this develops into a keen interest for Japanese culture.

今後、この興味はもっと深まっていくと期待しています。そして、イギリスの文化を経験するためにもっと日本人がイギリスを訪れてほしいと思っています！

I believe that this fascination will only deepen in the future. I also hope that more Japanese people can visit the UK and experience its culture.
