Hello! Singapore バックナンバー・第5回

8月がもうすぐ終わりますね。今年の夏はコロナで中止された祭りやイベントが数年ぶりに開かれていて、にぎやかさを取り戻した加賀市に、私はずっとワクワクしました。特に、生で花火を見るのは久しぶりで、片山津温泉で花火を見て、胸に爆音の響きを感じられて楽しかったです。

We’re almost at the end of August! I was very excited to see how lively Kaga became in the summer, especially with the festivals and events making a return after a COVID-induced hiatus. It’s been years since I’ve seen fireworks in person, so I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing the fireworks at Katayamazu Onsen and feeling the explosions reverberating in my chest.

ちなみに、シンガポールでも、ナショナルデーを記念するための大規模なお祝いがあるから、8月はにぎやかな時期です。ナショナルデーは8月9日の祝日で、1965年にマレーシア連邦から独立した日を記念します。何週間も前から、シンガポールの国旗がそこら中に立てられて、国旗が白色と赤色だから、赤いTシャツも安くなります。

Coincidentally, back home in Singapore, August is also a lively, festive period for us, because we have a big celebration for National Day. This is a national holiday that falls on the 9^th of August, and commemorates the day Singapore left Malaysia and became an independent country, in 1965. It’s a big deal: weeks before the date, Singapore flags are placed everywhere, and red t-shirts (the Singapore flag is red and white) go on sale at discounted prices.

ナショナルデーには、ナショナルデーパレード（NDP）が開催されます。1966年に初めてイベントを開催した時は、軍事パレードしかありませんでしたが、今のNDPでは戦車と戦闘機ではなく、学校などの芸能部によるいろいろなパフォーマンスや花火大会もあります。

On National Day itself, we hold the National Day Parade, which we usually just call NDP. Back when it was first held, in 1966, the event was just a military parade, and today, viewers can still see the tanks and fighter planes in action. However, the event has since evolved and now also features performances, many of which feature performing arts groups from schools, and a fireworks show.

でも、誰に聞いても、一番盛り上がるのは8月8日に学校で開催されるお祝いだと言うと思います。お祝いは各学校で独自に開催され、中学校以上では、イベント委員会は主に学生で構成されています。お祝いの日にはほとんど授業がないし、早く帰れるから、どの学生も楽しみにしていますが、お祝いで皆と一緒に歌うことを楽しみにしている人も多いです。

Ask anyone, however, and they will probably say that the real highlight of National Day is the in-school celebrations the day before, on the 8^th of August. Each school organizes their own, and from secondary school onwards, it is common for the organizing committee to be mostly made of students. Every student looks forward to this because there are usually no lessons and they get to go home early, but most also look forward to the mass singalong during the celebrations.

毎年、NDPの主催者は地元の歌手が歌うナショナルデーソングという、シンガポールへの希望や愛国の気持ちなどが込められた歌を発表します。学校のお祝いでも、主催者が生徒たちを体育館に集めてから、その年のナショナルデーソングとこれまでのナショナルデーソングを再生して、皆で一緒に歌います。ナショナルデーの一ヶ月前から、ラジオ局もナショナルデーソングを放送するから、スーパーやショッピングモールなど、どこでも聞こえてきます。

Every year, the NDP organizers release an NDP theme song, sung by local artistes. The song usually conveys hopes for Singapore’s future or feelings of devotion to the country, and is sung by everyone at that year’s parade. In schools, organizers will usually play that year’s song and some older favorites in the school hall during celebrations, and everyone will sing along. The songs are also broadcast by the public radio stations before National Day, so you will also hear them in supermarkets, shopping malls, and so on.

一番人気のある歌はキット・チャンという、当時台湾で活躍していたシンガポール出身の歌手が歌った「家」です。1998年に発表された哀愁のバラードで、歌詞はシンプルですが、どこにいても、帰る場所があると伝えてくれる曲です。古いですが、若い学生も歌詞をすべて覚えていて、名曲になりました。

The most popular song is Home, performed in 1998 by Kit Chan, a Singaporean singer who had then been based in Taiwan. It’s a melancholy ballad with simple but touching lyrics about having somewhere to belong. Even though it’s old, it’s a classic that even the younger students know by heart.

残念ながら、NDPのチケットの抽選はシンガポール国民と永住者に限ります。しかし、シンガポールにいればテレビでライブ配信を見られるし、海外にいればYouTubeでライブ配信も歌のPVも見られます。気になったら、ぜひ見てください！
