第10回 熱帯の島の雪
先月の最初の吹雪の後、なんとか空港にたどり着き、予定通りにシンガポールに戻りました。そこの暖かい気候の中で、家族と一緒に友達のインスタグラムストーリーで加賀市の吹雪の動画を見ました。
After the first blizzard last month, I managed to make my way to the airport and catch my scheduled flight back to Singapore. My family and I watched the rest of the blizzards in Kaga on my friend’s Instagram stories from the warmth of the tropics.
「吹雪の間に日本を出られてよかったですね」父が言いました。
“It’s lucky you got out of Japan in between the blizzards,” my dad remarked.
「まあ、帰ったら小雪が降っているといいけどね。テイラー・スウィフトが最近「スノー・オン・ザ・ビーチ」という曲を発表したんだけど、どんな感じか見に行きたい」と私が言いました。
“Hm, I hope there’s some light snow after I go back, actually,” I said. “Taylor Swift recently released a song called Snow on the Beach and I want to go see what it looks like.”
冗談のつもりでしたが、もし雪が十分落ち着いたら、やっぱりテイラーが描く景色を見に海へ行きたいです。冬の寒さがどんなに苦手でも、雪が魅惑的だと思います。去年、石川に来て初めての冬に、好奇心旺盛な私は吹雪の中、一人で10分ほど雪玉を投げ続けました。雪だるまも作ろうとしましたが、作り方がわからなくて、結局寒すぎたからあきらめました。
I was mostly joking, but if the snow calms down enough I think I would, indeed, like to go to the beach to see what Taylor was going on about. As much as I hate the winter cold, the snow fascinates me. Last year, in my first winter here, I was so curious that I went out in the middle of a snowstorm and threw snowballs for ten minutes, all by myself. I tried to make a snowman, as well, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it and gave up because I was too cold.
実は、熱帯のシンガポールでは、雪は多くの人を魅了します。あまりに魅力的なので、サイエンス・センター・シンガポールという科学館は、地元の人たちに冬を体験させるため、スノー・シティを2000年に建設しました。
In a tropical country like Singapore, snow fascinates a lot of people, actually. It fascinates us so much that in 2000, Science Center Singapore built Snow City to let the locals experience winter for themselves.

スノー・シティは常設の屋内スノーセンターで、最大の見どころは人工雪を敷き詰めた1,200平方メートル（オリンピックプールほどの大きさ）の雪室です。雪面は40センチに維持していて、そのために毎週約1万〜1万5千キロの雪を生産しています。
Snow city is a permanent indoor snow center, and its main attraction is the Snow Chamber: a 1,200 square-meter room (about the size of an Olympic swimming pool) filled with artificial snow. The snow level is kept at 40 cm, and to maintain this, about 10,000 to 15,000 kg of snow is produced every week.

雪室の中に、ゴムチューブで滑り降りることができる雪で作られた全長60メートルのスロープがあります。また、氷の上を滑るバンパーカーやのんびりできるアイスホテルエリアもあります（残念ですが、宿泊はできません）。
In the Snow Chamber, you will find a 60-meters long snow slope that you can slide down on inflatable tubes. There are also bumper cars that slide around on ice, and an ice lodge area that you can relax in, though you can’t stay overnight in it.

コロナ禍の前に、スノー・シティには年間約25万人が訪れました。地元の人たちだけではなく、雪が降らない他国からの観光客にも人気のある観光スポットです。学生団体向けに割引や科学教室を開催しているため、学校が生徒のために遠足を企画することもあります。私も小学校の時に、スノー・シティへ遠足に行ったことがあります。
Before COVID, Snow City received around 250,000 visitors a year. It is a popular attraction not just among the locals, but also among tourists from other countries where it doesn’t snow. As it offers discounts and science workshops for student groups, schools also sometimes organize field trips for the students. I remember going there on a field trip when I was in primary school myself!
かつて、シンガポールで冬のアクティビティが体験できるのはスノー・シティだけでしたが、今はアイススケートなどのスポーツも体験できるようになりました。シンガポールにはショッピングモールの中に、アイススケート場が2つあります。ほとんどの人はただ遊びに行きますが、アイスホッケーの試合やフィギュアスケートのレッスンをしている人も時々見えます。
While Snow City used to be the only place you could experience winter activities in Singapore, you can now also try sports like ice skating! Singapore has two ice skating rinks, both of which are in shopping malls. Most people go there just to have fun, but you can sometimes also see ice hockey games or people having figure skating lessons.

今年は、スケート、サーフィン、室内スキーなどが体験できるスポーツセンターも開設する予定だそうです！室内スキーの雰囲気はたぶん雪の中のスキーとだいぶ違うかもしれませんが、もうすぐこの熱帯の島のシンガポールでスキーが体験できるなんて、すごくないでしょうか。でも、吹雪が落ち着いたら、こたつから出られれば、やっぱり一度だけ雪の中のスキーもやってみたいと思います。
This year, there are also plans to open a sports center where you can try skating, surfing, and indoor skiing! While the atmosphere of indoor skiing is probably very different to that of skiing outdoors in the snow, I think it’s amazing that we’ll soon be able to try skiing on this tropical island at all. Still, if I can leave the kotatsu when the weather calms down, maybe I’ll go try skiing in the snow as well… just once.
