第17回 食パンでアイスサンド
ここ2カ月、私と同僚は新しい加賀パフェを試して回り、SNS用に写真やビデオを撮ってきました。一口食べて、今何を食べたか当てるのは楽しいので、加賀パフェが好きです。特にはづちをのような店では、ほうれん草のクラッカーのような面白い食材がたくさんあって、すごく楽しいと思います。
In the last couple of months, my colleagues and I have gone around trying the new KAGA Parfaits, taking photos and videos of them for social media. I love the KAGA Parfaits—I think it’s a lot of fun taking a bite and trying to guess what I’ve just eaten, especially at places like Hazuchio, where there are lots of interesting components like spinach crackers.

石川県民と同じく、シンガポール人はアイスが大好きで、今年はシンガポール人が1億2670万米ドル（約185億3000万円）を費やすと予想されています。これは意外なことではありません。なぜかと言うと、シンガポールでは常に暑いし、いろいろな種類のアイスクリームを買うことができるからです。例えば、アイスクリーム屋さんやジェラート屋さんもあるし、IKEAなどの家具屋さんでも豆乳を使ったおいしいバニラアイスクリームが売っていたりします。また、クーリッシュやピノなど、日本のアイスクリームも、日本の輸入品店やドンキホーテで買うことができます。
Singaporeans, like Ishikawa residents, love ice-cream. In fact, this year, Singaporeans are expected to spend 126.7 million US Dollars (around 18.53 billion yen) on it! This probably isn’t surprising—after all, it is always hot in Singapore, and you can buy many different types of ice-cream. For instance, there are ice-cream and gelato stores, and you can even get ice-cream at furniture stores like IKEA, which sells a delicious vanilla ice-cream made with soy milk. You can also find Japanese ice-creams like Coolish and Pino in Japanese import stores or Donki!

シンガポールでいろいろな高級なアイスを買えますが、シンガポール人にとって最も身近なアイスといえば、やっぱりアイスサンドです。皆さんがアイスを2枚のクッキーで挟んだものというアイスを食べたことがあるかと思いますが、シンガポールのアイスサンドは違います。長方形のアイスクリームのブロックを半分に折ったパンで挟んだ、文字通りのサンドイッチです。
Despite the many fancy options available, though, the ice-cream that’s near and dear to every Singaporean’s heart is the ice-cream sandwich. You probably think you’ve had an ice-cream sandwich before—a small block of ice-cream, sandwiched between two cookies, right? But I bet you haven’t had the Singaporean ice-cream sandwich: a literal sandwich, a rectangular block of ice-cream, in a slice of bread that’s been folded in half.

使う食パンはレインボーパンと呼びますが、実は虹色ではなく、ピンクと緑が渦を巻いているものです。パンダンという熱帯植物で味をつけて、やや甘いです。アイスはチョコレートやバニラなどの一般的な味もありますが、スイートコーン、ラズベリー・リップル
（バニラの中にラズベリーが散りばめられている）やドリアンなど面白い味もあります。
We call the bread rainbow bread, but it’s actually just pink and green, swirled together. It’s flavored lightly, with pandan, and is slightly sweet. The ice-cream comes in basic flavors like chocolate and vanilla, but you can also find flavors like sweet corn, raspberry ripple (raspberry streaks in vanilla), and durian.
カップに入ったアイスクリームもあるし、ウエハース2枚で挟んだ、普通のアイスサンドのようなものも買えますが、食パンはふわふわで柔らかく、溶けたアイスをよく吸ってくれるから、シンガポール人なら誰でも、食パンが最良の選択だと言います。
You can also get the ice-cream in a cup, or sandwiched between two wafers instead so it’s more like a typical ice-cream sandwich. But the bread is soft and fluffy, and helps soak up the melting ice-cream, and any Singaporean will say that it is the superior choice.

シンガポールのアイスサンドは安い屋台料理で、ほとんどが2ドル（～200円）以下です。屋台のカートは通り沿いに停まっていて、たいてい大きな傘で覆われています。カートは自転車やオートバイにつながれています。私が子供のころ、アイス屋さんはカートを学校の校門や公共アパートの周辺にカート持ち込んでいました。しかし、政府は露天商を段階的に排除しようとしているため、20年ほど前から路上でアイスを販売する新しい許可証を与えていないので、今となっては、屋台を見つけるのは珍しくなりました。でも運が良ければ、主要なショッピング街であるオーチャード・ロード沿いでは、いくつかのカートを見つけることができます。
These ice-cream sandwiches are a cheap street food; most will cost 2 dollars (~200 yen) or less. They’re sold at carts parked along the street, usually covered by a large umbrella. The carts are hooked up to a bicycle or a motorcycle; when I was younger, the hawkers used to bring the cart around to school gates or around public flats, but it’s a dying business. As the government is trying to phase out street hawkers, it has not given out any new license to sell ice-cream on the street since around 20 years ago. Nowadays, you’d be lucky to find a cart, though if you’re lucky, you can find a few carts along Orchard Road, our major shopping district.

消えつつあるかもしれませんが、シンガポールのアイスサンドはシンガポール人の誰もが子供の頃に大好きだったものです。特にコロナ禍の後、このアイスサンドを見つけるのが難しくなっていて、数年前の調査によると、残っているカートの数は7軒だと発表しました。運よくカートを見つけたら、ぜひ食べてみてください！
Though it may be disappearing, the Singaporean ice-cream sandwich is everyone’s childhood favorite. It’s become increasingly difficult to find these ice-cream sandwiches, especially after COVID—a survey a few years ago put the number of remaining hawkers at 7—so if you’re lucky enough to find a cart, don’t miss your chance to try it!
