第19回 シンガポールでも温泉？
寒くなってきたので、また定期的に総湯に行くようになりました。私は温泉に行くのが大好きで、夏でも行くことがありますが、寒い時期の温泉が最高ですね。お風呂から出た後もずっとポカポカしていて、やっぱり気持ちがいいと思います。
As it has gotten colder, I have started going to the public Soyu baths more regularly again. I love going to the onsen and I’ll even go in summer, sometimes, but it really is the best when it’s cold. I love how comfortable it is to feel warm long after getting out of the bath.
ところで、シンガポールにも温泉があるのを知っていますか。
Did you know, by the way, that we also have a hot spring in Singapore?
シンガポールのセンバワン温泉は1909年にパイナップル農園で発見されて、地元の人々が簡単に利用できるように井戸が作られました。この温泉は癒しの効果があると信じられていた地元の人々に人気があり、また、卵をゆでたり、洗濯をしたり、家禽の羽毛を取り除いたりするのにも使われました。一方、パイナップル農園の経営者である中国人実業家は、この湧き水を飲料水として瓶詰めし始めました。1922年、この地は清涼飲料会社のF&N社によって買収され、その後何年にもわたってこの水のボトリングが続けられました。
Singapore’s Sembawang hot spring was discovered in a pineapple plantation in 1909, and a well was built so that locals could have easy access to the water. The spring was popular with the locals, who believed the water had healing properties. They also went there to boil eggs, wash clothes, and de-feather poultry. Meanwhile, the pineapple plantation’s owner, a Chinese businessman, began bottling the spring water for consumption. In 1922, the site was acquired by a soft drink company, F&N, which continued to bottle the water for years to follow.
しかし1985年、国防省が近くの軍事基地を拡張するためにこの土地を取得しました。国防省がこの地域をフェンスで囲う計画を発表したとき、地元の人々は温泉を開放し続けるよう嘆願しました。国防省が2002年に市民の要求に応じると発表し、井戸までの小道も整備しました。ある時点で、パイプと蛇口も設置され、人々がより簡単に温泉水を汲めるようになりました。
In 1985, however, the Ministry of Defence acquired the land to expand a nearby military air base. When they announced plans to fence the area off, locals petitioned to keep the hot spring open. In 2002, the Ministry announced they would accede to the request and built a small path to the well. At some point, pipes and taps were also installed so people could draw up the spring water more easily.

長年、温泉は荒れ果てた小さな公園でしたが、2016年に国防省がシンガポール政府に土地を返還しました。その後、国立公園局が改修工事を行い、2020年にリニューアルオープンしました。
For years, the hot spring was a small, run-down park, but in 2016, the Ministry of Defence returned the land to the Singapore government. After that, the National Parks Board renovated the area, and the park reopened in 2020.
温泉公園は現在、緑豊かなエリアになりました。最大の見どころは3つの滝のようなプールがある足湯で、一番外側のプールのお湯は40度とかなり熱いです。
The hot spring park is now a lush, green area. Its main attraction is the footbath, which has three cascading pools, and the water in the outermost pool is a fairly hot 40 degrees Celsius.

共用の足湯に浸かりたくない場合や、温泉卵を茹でるための水を汲むための蛇口もあります。庭や小さなレストランで時間をゆっくり過ごすこともできます。100年前に作られた井戸がある赤レンガの建物も遺産として保存されています。
There are also taps to fill up your own buckets, if you don’t want to soak in the shared footbath, and to collect water to boil your own onsen eggs. Visitors can also relax in the garden and the small restaurant. The red brick building that housed the original well has also been kept, as a heritage exhibit.
大浴場などはないので、バケツ一杯の水を持ち帰らなければ、温泉に全身浸かることはできません。とはいっても、シンガポールの暑さを考えれば、いずれにしても入りたいと思う人は少ないと思います。シンガポール人には共同浴場の文化もないので、大浴場ができても恥ずかしくて利用したくないかもしれません。だから、いずれ家に帰ったら何らかの形で温泉を楽しめるのは嬉しいですが、今のうちにここの総湯に行くのを楽しむつもりです。
There isn’t a large, public bath, so you still can’t take a full-body soak in the hot spring unless you carry buckets of water home with you. Considering how hot it is in Singapore, though, probably not many people would want to anyway. Singaporeans also don’t have a culture of shared baths, so they would likely be too shy to use a public bath even if one was built. So while I’m happy I’ll be able to access a hot spring in some way when I eventually go home, I’m still going to enjoy going to the public baths here while I can!
