イギリスの大学生活
イギリスでは、新学期が始まったので、本ブログでもイギリスの大学生活について話したいと思います。イギリスと日本の大学生活には似ている点もありますが、異なる点も多くあります。また、イギリスの大学生活は、大学によって異なることもあります。イギリスでは、「入学試験」はありませんが、高校三年生は「A LEVEL」という試験を受けて、その成績や面接、自己紹介文の結果で、希望する大学に入学することができます。
In the UK, the new school year started recently so I thought I would make a blog about university life in the UK. In some ways university life in the UK is similar to Japan, but there are also some big differences. Furthermore, university life within the UK differs heavily depending on which University you choose to go to. There are no entrance exams in UK universities and most students take the same tests during their final year of high school called ‘A Level’s’. Depending on your test results as well as the quality of your personal statement and interview, you may be able to enter the University of your choice.
私はイングランドの北東部にある「ダラム大学」という大学で勉強をしました。歴史のある大学で、キャンパスの中心には1093年に建てられた大聖堂があります。ダラムは元々、修道士たちが勉強していた場所で、1832年に大学が創設されました。ダラムは30分以内で回れる町ですが、自然が豊かで、町を流れる川や河畔から美しい大聖堂を見ることができます。さらに、町の建物は綺麗なので、散歩を楽しめる場所だと思います。ダラムはハリーポッターの映画の撮影地でもあり、世界中のハリーポッターファンに人気がある場所です。そのため、ダラムの大学生はよく映画と同じような衣装を着ることがあります。
I went to a university called ‘Durham University’ in the North east of England. The University is relatively old, and the center of the campus is a large cathedral which has existed since 1093 AD. Durham was historically a place where monks would study, but became an official university in 1832. Durham is a relatively small city, only taking around 30 minutes to walk around it. However, its natural beauty is stunning with a river which flows through the town from which you can gaze at the beautiful cathedral. In addition to this, the architecture is beautiful, making it an ideal place to have a stroll. Famously, Durham is known as a filming location for the Harry potter movies and many fans from all over the world come to visit. Students in Durham also sometimes wear robes similar to once in the series.

オクスフォード大学やケンブリッジ大学と同様に、ダラム大学にも「カレッジ制度」があります。ハリーポッターの「寮」と似たような制度ですが、イギリス国内でも珍しいものです。「カレッジ」とは、一年生が必ず住む寮であり、卒業するまで所属するコミュニティでもあります。ダラム大学には17のカレッジがあって、それぞれのカレッジには独自の習慣があります。スポーツの際には、カレッジ同士が対決します。私のカレッジは「セント・メアリーズ」と呼ばれていて、親しみやすく、開放的なカレッジだと言われています。毎年、多くのイベントがあって、簡単に友達を作ることができる場所です。
Durham, like Oxford and Cambridge, is known for its ‘college system’. This system is rare and similar to the ‘house’ system in Harry Potter. A ‘college’ is at once a dormitory for first years as well as a community which you belong to until graduation. There are 17 colleges in Durham, each with their respective traditions. Different colleges compete with each other during sporting events. My college was called ‘St Mary’s College’ and was known for being a friendly and inclusive college. We had many events every year and it was a great place to make friends.

一年生は全員がカレッジに住まなければならないので、一年生の時は常に同じ志を持つ人たちに囲まれていました。二年生になると、ほとんどの大学生は他の学生とシェアハウスをして住みます。運よく、私は友達と一緒に住むことができました。シェアハウスで住むことは、イギリスの大学生活の重要な一部分です。他の人と一緒に生活することを学ぶ大切な時期で、多くの友達グループにとっては困難な時期にもなります。しかし、うまくいけば、シェアハウスで一緒に住んだ友達は一生の友達になれることもあります。
All first years have to live within the college, so I was surrounded by likeminded people all the time. However, once first year is over, most students usually share a house. I was lucky enough to live with friends after my first year. Living in a shared house is a vital part of the UK university experience. It is a time when you have to learn how to live with others, and can even be a challenging time for friendship groups. However, if everything goes well, the friends you live with usually become friends for life.
セント・メアリーズでは、毎年三回のボール（舞踏会）が開催されます。ボールでは三つのコース料理を楽しんだ後、ライブ音楽を聴いて、友人と踊ることができます。ボールはダラムの大学生活の一大イベントで、学生たちにとって非常に人気があります。さらに、大学の特徴として「カレッジバー」も挙げられます。各カレッジにはそれぞれバーがあって、常に学生で賑わっていて、コスプレをしている学生も多いです。
At St Mary’s College we had balls three times a year. At balls, you usually eat a three-course meal which is followed by live music and dancing. These events are usually the highlights of the year and are popular with students. Another unique feature of the university each college has their own bar, which are always filled with students, with some even wearing cosplay.

カレッジのスポーツも、ダラムの大学生活の重要な一部分です。カレッジのスポーツは、日本の大学におけるサークルのようなものです。活動は自由で、スポーツの上達よりも、友人を作ることが主な目的です。私はセイント・メーリズのサッカーチームに参加していて、週末には他のカレッジと試合をしていました。我々のチームは非常に弱く、在学中に勝った試合は三つしかありませんでしたが、仲の良い友人ができただけでなく、一生忘れられない思い出もできました。もっとレベルの高いスポーツをしたい人は、大学の代表チームに参加していました。これらのチームは、日本の大学の部活のように週に数回練習を行って、他大学との試合もあります。
College sports is a big part of university life in Durham. College sport is the equivalent to what may be called a ‘Circle’ in Japanese universities. It is very casual and the main goal is to make friends rather than sporting achievement. I played for my college football team and competed against other colleges on the weekends. We were not a very good team, and I think I have only won around three matches in my time playing there. However, I made some great friends and memories which I will never forget. For those who want to play at a higher level, there are University level teams which are equivalent to what is known as ‘Bukatsu’ in Japanese Universities. Here, club members have to go training multiple times a week and compete with other Universities.
三年生の時、交換留学生として一年間大阪大学で勉強していました。いくつもの点で、 イギリスの大学生活に似た部分が多かったです。サッカーサークルに入って、友人ができました！下手だったけどね．．．交換留学生向けのプログラムに参加して、毎日日本語と日本の文化の授業を受けていました。先生たちが素晴らしく、本当にお世話になりました。 私にとって、日本の大学生活を楽しむことや日本人の学生との交流は、貴重な経験として心に残ります。 イギリスでは日本語を話す機会が少なかったですが、留学生として毎日日本語を話すことができたので、日本語の能力が上達しました。とても面白い時間を過ごした大阪での経験を将来ブログで書く予定です!
During my third year I spent a year studying as an exchange student at Osaka University. In some ways my time there was very similar to the time I spent as a student in the UK. I joined a football club, and although I didn’t play very well, I managed to make some friends. I partook in a course targeted at exchange students, where I had Japanese lessons every day as well as lessons focusing on Japanese culture. The teachers were all amazing and I’m truly indebted to them all. It was valuable for me to experience Japanese university life and interact with Japanese university students. I was also able to improve my Japanese skills significantly by talking every day, something which I was unable to do in the UK. I had a great time and plan to write more about my time in Osaka in the future.
